Matala

Matala is located 4km from our farm, where the Messara plain meets the Asteroussia Mountains. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Crete and certainly the most famous beach of the southern Heraklion prefecture. It is famous for its caves in the rocks and the hippies of the 1970s. The beach is very well organized with umbrellas, toilets, showers, lifeguard, first aid, beach volley courts, snack bars, water sports, excursion boats, a camping site, etc. In the evenings, the bars on the beach are popular with both locals and foreigners specially in June, when the internationally renowned Matala Festival takes place.
